Tom Hentz, former city lieutenant, dies at 55

By SANDI LYNN BROWN

To Cleona police Chief Ray Barry, Thomas R. Hentz Sr. will forever be a prankster.

"Tom was a very humorous individual," Barry, a former county detective, said yesterday. "He always believed in making people laugh, and he always did a good job."

Hentz, 55, of 1900 Church St., Lebanon, died Friday, March 21, 2003, at home. He was the husband of Diana M. Becker Hentz, to whom he was married 37 years.

Born Sept. 7, 1947, in Lebanon, he was the son of Carrie E. Bender Hentz of Lebanon and the late Harry L. Hentz. A 1965 graduate of Lebanon High School, he retired as a lieutenant from the Lebanon city police department after 25 years of service. He worked part time as a police officer for Cornwall and part time for New Penn Motor Express in Lebanon.

He was a member of Living Waters Chapel in Lebanon, where he played trumpet in the church orchestra, and the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 42, Lebanon. A Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War, he was an avid hunter and Civil War re-enactor.

Barry met Hentz nearly three decades ago during a Penn State program they took together at the municipal building. At the time, Barry was working at the Lebanon County prison, and Hentz was just beginning his job with the city police.

The men kept in touch through the years, and Barry said it was Hentz's personality that helped him excel in his career.

"He was a very personable person," Barry said. "He loved people. That's what made him an outstanding police officer. He's going to be missed by the law enforcement. He was a cop until the day he died."

Former Lebanon police Chief Bernie Reilly worked with Hentz for 20 years. The two men occasionally crossed paths and would talk about how things used to be, Reilly recalled yesterday.

"He was an exemplary officer," he said. "He was an easygoing guy with a good sense of humor."

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a son, Thomas R. Hentz Jr., husband of Stephanie, of Lancaster; three daughters, Gloria J. Miller, wife of Christopher, of Fredericksburg; Jodi L. Getch, wife of Steven, of Lebanon; and Amy S. Ficco, wife of Anthony III, of Myerstown; a sister, Ruth N. Mence, wife of Edgar, of Weekiwachee, Fla.; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Living Waters Chapel, 1900 Jay St., Lebanon. Viewing hours will be at 9:30 a.m. at the church and from 6-8 p.m. tomorrow at the Kreamer Funeral Home, 618 E. Main St., Annville. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Ebenezer.

The FOP Honor Guard will be provided at viewing services, and a graveside FOP service will be held Tuesday.

Ball team captain dies in collision

A Gap man, the captain of his company's softball team, was killed early this morning in a truck crash as he was driving home from playing in an all-night charity softball tournament.

Robert Lee Kissinger, 35, of 644 Meeting House Road, was killed instantly, police said, when his pickup truck crashed into an oncoming bus on Route 322 about one-half mile east of Blue Ball.

East Earl Township Chief of Police Charles Steiner said that Kissinger, a Ford New Holland employee, had played earlier this morning in the ninth annual Softball Weekend which benefits the Easter Seal Society of Lancaster County.

After finishing the game at 3 a.m., Steiner said Kissinger, captain and coach of the company's softball team, apparently drove several other people home and was returning to his house when the accident happened shortly before 6 a.m.

Steiner said it's possible Kissinger may have fallen asleep at the wheel. His eastbound truck crossed the center lane and struck the left front of a westbound bus.

The bus driver, Donald Farmer, 54, of Kennett Square, tried to avoid the oncoming truck and drove off the road, Steiner said. The bus struck a utility pole and landed in a cornfield.

Farmer was not injured, Steiner said, but was taken to Ephrata Community Hospital.

There were no passengers in the charter bus, which was traveling from Modena to Liverpool, according to police. Kissinger also was alone in his truck at the time of the crash.

Dr. Michael P. Szutowicz, a deputy Lancaster County coroner, pronounced Kissinger dead at the scene. Kissinger's body was removed from the wreckage around 7 a.m. by rescue personnel from New Holland and Blue Ball.

A family spokesman said that Kissinger was captain and coach of "The Predators," a softball team whose members are third-shift workers at Ford New Holland.

As they had many times before, The Predators participated in the annual softball tournament at Stauffer Park, which is a fund-raising effort sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Police, Red Rose Lodge 16. This year, The Predators played from midnight to 3 a.m.

Kissinger had been an employee at Ford New Holland since 1974, working in the tooling department.

He was the husband of Vickie L. Mull Kissinger. The couple observed their 14th wedding anniversary on Oct. 23.

In addition to his employment at Ford New Holland, Kissinger was a licensed taxidermist and was the owner / operator of Welsh Mountain Taxidermy.

He was a member of Muddy Creek Lutheran Church, the Penn Dutch Sportsman's Association of New Holland and the National Rifle Association.

Kissinger also was an avid hunting and fishing enthusiast and participated in the Mr. and Mrs. Bowling League at the Blue Ball Lanes.

Born in Lancaster, he was a son of Lloyd and Nancy Keller Kissinger Jr. of Ephrata.

Surviving in addition to his wife and parents is a daughter, Melanie A., at home.
