Esther E. Harnly, 91, of Brethren Village, died Saturday evening following a lengthy illness at the home, where she lived since 1976.

A retired registered nurse, she had worked at Lancaster General Hospital and did private duty nursing in the Lancaster area.

She was a graduate of the former Lititz High School and Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing.

Born in Penn Township, she was a daughter of the late Melvin G. Harnly and the late Annie Earhart Harnly Snyder.

She was a member of Hempfield Church of the Brethren.

Surviving are a sister, Mary E. Harnly of Brethren Village. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul, Eugene and Naaman.

Pauline Ritz, census worker

Pauline F. Ritz, 66, of 220 Aspen Lane, Lititz, died Wednesday morning at her home following an illness of one year.

She was the wife of Paul I. Ritz, with whom she celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary Feb. 24, 1989.

Born in Lititz, she was a daughter of Grace Wahl Harnley, Lititz, and the late Lyman Harnley.

She was employed as a supervisory field representative for the United States Department of Commerce, Bureau of Census, for 15 years, retiring in 1989. In 1987, she received the Bronze Medal Award from the U.S. Department of Commerce for superior federal service and continuous commendable performance as a field representative in the Philadelphia region.

She was a member of the Moravian Church, Lititz, and a past president of the A.B.C.D., Lititz.

Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are a son, Dr. Douglas R. Ritz, Orangeburg, S.C.; two daughters, Patricia L., wife of John A. Dougherty, Manheim; and Beth E. Greiner, Lancaster; and one grandson.

ESTHER M. FOCHT, 94, SHIRT COMPANY WORKER

Esther M. Focht, 94, formerly of Reading, died Tuesday morning in Moravian Manor in Lititz, following a long illness. She had been a resident of Moravian Manor for the past 13 years.

She was the wife of Irvin R. Focht, who died in 1979.

Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Newton B. and Annie Shenk Gibble.

She had been employed at the former Wide-A-Wake Shirt Co. in Reading, where she had been the shift floor leader for over 40 years. She retired in 1962.

She was a member of St John's United Church of Christ in Reading and enjoyed traveling throughout the United States. She also enjoyed home sewing and made most of her own clothes.

Surviving is a sister, Helen G. Dennis of Manheim.!

Esther married someone Irvin R. Focht. Irvin died in 1979.

Betty Gochenaur, church organist, teller

Betty O. Gochenaur, 77, formerly of 115 N. Main St., Manheim, died unexpectedly of natural causes Wednesday at Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim.
Mrs. Gochenaur worked 14 years as a teller and then in the customer service department of the former Manheim National Bank, now Farmers First Bank, Manheim branch. She retired in 1989.
She previously worked 25 years in the office at the former Raymark Industries, Manheim.
Mrs. Gochenaur was an active member of Jerusalem United Church of Christ, Penryn, where she was church organist for 46 years and church secretary and choir director for many years. She also served as an elder and deacon on the church consistory and taught Sunday school and Bible school.
She volunteered at the Nearly Nu Shop, Manheim, and was its treasurer for seven years.
An avid bowler, she was a Pennsylvania state bowling champion in the women's division. Her average score was 184.
Born in Mastersonville, she was the daughter of the late Allen P. and Lottie Greiner Ober.
Her husband, Clarence Gochenaur, died in 1978.
Surviving are a stepdaughter, Arlene Nunemacher of Manheim; six stepgrandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Margaret Shank; two brothers, Allen Ray and David Kenneth Ober; and a sister, Amelia Ober.

Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m., and Wednesday from noon until the time of a
service at 1 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Ed Huntley, pastor of
Federated Church.

Burial will be at Greenlawn Memory Gardens.

Cloyd M. Gibble, 93, died Sunday at the Whitehall Leader Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He formerly was of 123 E. Market St., Marietta and was the husband of Merval H. Curran Gibble.

Born in Terre Hill, he was the advertising manager for Sears Roebuck and Company, Philadelphia, for 20 years and he retired in 1960 from the Hanover Store, York County. He was baptized in the Lutheran Faith.

He was the last of his immediate family and is survived by his wife.

Jacob Welcomer Fink, 54, died on Monday (evening) at 1:30 o'clock, at his home in Penn township of complications. He was a member of the United Brethren church. Besides his wife, who was Mary Buch, before marriage, the following children survive: Irvin, Jacob, Mrs. Rolandis Witman, Mrs. Cora Graham, and Mrs. Elmer Leese, of Penn township, Raymond, Manheim; Phares, Bonding Christ, Lancaster' Morman and Claude at home. Twenty one grandchildren, one sister. Mrs. Oliver May., and two brother, Henry and George Welcomer, of York, also survive. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home, with burial in the Fairview Cemetery.

Ethel E. Buch, 85, of the Mt. Hope Home in Manheim, died Thursday at the home after a long illness.

She was the wife of Burnell H. Buch, who died in 1981.

A resident of the home since July 1992, she formerly lived at 134 Gramby St., Manheim.

Mrs. Buch was a member of White Oak Church of the Brethren in Manheim. She enjoyed crocheting and making bedspreads and tablecloths and was especially well-known for her doilies.

She enjoyed reading and writing poems. She also kept up correspondence with service people and missionaries overseas.

Born in Manheim, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin R. Wike.

She was the the last of her immediate family.

Howard Buch, 67 Dies in Lancaster Hospital

Howard W. Buch, 67, of Lancaster, a former resident of Manheim, father of William E. Buch of Fredriksburg, died on Firday at the Lancaster General Hospital. He was in poor health for two years.

A son of the late Christian and Amanda White Buch, his wife was the late Minnie Hornberger Buch. Surviving in addition to the son named are: two sisters, Mrs. Mary Fink and Miss Lillie Buch, both of Manheim; a brother, Harry Buch of Manheim R1, and three grandchildren.

Howard married Minnie Hornberger about 1905 in Lancaster County, PA. Minnie was born about 1881 in Pine Grove, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA and died before 1950.

General Notes: I have an obituary in 1915 (Elizabeth White Singer), stating that she has a son in Lancaster. Looking at the 1900 census, I find a Walter W Singer aged 27 with a wife Viola (clearly spelt) aged 28, and Son Walter B age 4.

Moving forward to the 1920 census I find a Walter W Singer, age 37 (looks like a match) but this wife appears to be Minnie R, aged 29, and one son William R, age 1 y 3 months. This is obviously not the same William, based on age... Did Walter lose both his wife and son? or maybe a diviorce and then remarry within this decade?

In the 1930 census, we have Walter W Singer, age 47, and son William R, aged 11, so this is good. However, the wife is now Catharine age 52.

Walter married Viola about 1905 in Lancaster County, PA. Viola was born about 1882.

Fifteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a brother, Harold Keath, Philadelphia, also survive.

Elam Waltman of Cornwall, a retired employee of the Cornwall ore mines, yesterday celebrated his seventy-ninth birthday anniversary.

He resides with his daughter, Miss Dora Waltman, and is in good health. His wife, Berth (Hilton) Waltman died abotu 15 years ago.

Waltman ahd five children of which four are still living. They are: Raymond, Russell and Dora Waltman adn Viola (Mrs. Edwin Boyer) all of Cornwall. He has 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Clayton Hilton died at his home at Lexington on Tuesday morning, from pneumonia, aged 29 years, 11 months and 8 days. Deceased was a carpenter by trade and worked for John Todd. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Hilton, of Lexington, survive, also his wife and these children: Bernetha, Louetta, Roy and Edna. The following are brothers and sisters: Mrs. Tilden Melly, of Manheim; Mrs. Morris Irvin, Brunnerville; John, of Voganville; Anna and David, of Lexington. The funeral was held this morning in the Penryn Lutheran Church, with interment in the cemetery adjoining.

MRS. CLAYTON HILTON

Mrs. Mary M. Hilton, seventy-seven, Lexington, Lititz R1, died at Lancaster General Hospital Wednesday at 5:15 p.m. after a lingering illness. She had been admitted to the hospital two weeks before her death.

The wife of the last Clayton Hilton, she was born in Kissel Hill, Warwick Twp., to the late Ralph and Seda Demmy Todd and was a resident of Lititz all her life.

She is survived by two sons, Lloyd Weidman, Lititz R1, and Roy T. Hilton, Lititz R2, and a daughter, Luetta, wife of Clarence B. Keller, Lititz..

Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, a brother John D. Todd, Lititz, and a sister, Mrs. Amanda Enck, Lititz.

Dorothy Jean Mort, 68, of 6 Keener Road, Lititz, died at 7:15 a.m. Thursday at the Hershey Medical Center after a two month illness.

She and her husband, Charles Edward Mort, were married 47 years on Feb. 23. Born in Brunnerville, she was the daughter of the late Morris and Nora Hilton Irvin.

Formerly of Mifflin County, Mrs. Mort lived in Elizabeth Township since 1959.

She was a member of Coleman Memorial Chapel in Brickerville and its Women's Circle. She enjoyed making quilts and crocheting

Surviving besides her husband are four sisters, Esther Boyer of Clayton, N.C., Evelyn, wife of Howard Neidiegh, of Lititz, and Kathryn, wife of James Schreiner, and Lois, wife of Isaac Bomberger, both of Penryn; and two brothers, Paul Irvin of Lititz, and Clarence Irvin of Brickerville.

Charles Edward Mort, 79, of 6 Keener Road, Brickerville, died Thursday morning at the United Zion Community, Lexington, after a three-month illness.
His wife, Dorothy Jean Irvin Mort, died in 1993.
Born in McVeytown, Mifflin County, he was the son of the late William J. and Dora A. Vaughn Mort.
He had lived in Elizabethtown Township since 1957, where he owned and operated a machine repair shop next to his home from 1970 to 1991.
For 22 years, until 1978, he had been employed at the Wilbur Chocolate Co., in the repair and maintenance department.
He served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant in the Quartermaster Corps of the Graves Registration Branch during World War II.
He was a member and elder of Coleman Memorial Chapel at Brickerville.
Surviving are two sisters, Thelma Dickson of Thompsontown and Bettyrose , wife of Carl Kane of New Alexandria; and two brothers, Donald B. Mort of Lewistown and James M. Mort of McClure.

Kathryn E. Sweigart

Kathryn E. Sweigart, 92, formerly of Reamstown, Lancaster County, died of natural causes Sunday, March 10, 2002, in the emergency room of the Reading Hospital & Medical Center, West Reading, where she was taken from the Denver Nursing Home in Stevens, where she had resided since 1999. She was the wife of the late Lloyd D. Sweigart, who died June 2, 1978.

Born in Schaefferstown, she was a daughter of the late William and Clara Weiss Gerhart. She was a member of Reamstown Church of God and the Cocalico Senior Citizens Group in Reinholds. She enjoyed gardening, camping, cooking and crocheting.

Surviving are a son, Harold J., husband of Anna Marie Fey Sweigart of Reinholds; daughters Helen A. Roth of Adamstown, Esther C. Burkhart of Reamstown, Arlene F. Fuller of Reinholds, Erma M., wife of Kenneth A. Parsons of Stevens, and Linda L., wife of Alan R. Echternact, and Karen C., wife of Elvin L. Weber, both of Denver; sisters Carrie Hilton of Colonial Lodge in Denver and Clara, wife of Irvin Showalter of Ephrata; brothers Leon, husband of Betty Wenrich Gerhart of Stevens, and Harvey, husband of Janet Ohmacht Gerhart of Wernersville; a half-brother, Walter Sweigart of New Cumberland; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a son, Barry Sweigart, who died in 1985.

Her funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Good Funeral Home & Cremation Centre of Reamstown, preceded by a viewing from 7 to 8 p.m. tomorrow. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Sinking Spring.

Carrie M. Hilton, 88, of 3 Oak Lane, Stevens, Lancaster County, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, at Ephrata Manor, where she had lived for three years. She was the wife of the late John I. Hilton, who died Aug. 18, 1988.

Born in Schaefferstown, she was a daughter of the late William S. Gerhart and Clara Weiss Gerhart Sweigart. She was employed for 50 years at the former Walter W. Moyer Co., Ephrata. She was a member of Bergstrasse Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ephrata and enjoyed quilting, crocheting, making crafts and traveling.

Surviving are brothers Leon E., husband of Betty J. Wenrich Gerhart of Stevens, and Harvey W., husband of Janet L. Ohnmacht Gerhart of Wernersville; sister Clara E., wife of Irvin Showalter of Ephrata. She was preceded in death by sisters Hettie Engle, Kathryn Sweigart and Alice Gerhart; brothers John, Frank, William, Roy and Jacob Gerhart; and half-brother Walter Sweigart.

He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked as a carpenter for the former Howard Mowrer Contractor of Lititz. A resident of Lititz for most of his life, he retired eight years ago from Wilbur Chocolate Co. where he was a mixing department foreman.

FLOY ULRICH, POLICE OFFICER

Floy E. Ulrich, 70, the first female police officer in Lititz Borough, died unexpectedly Friday evening at Lancaster General Hospital. She had been under a doctor's care.

A resident of 115 S. Oak St., Lititz, she was the wife of Bruce K. Ulrich. They celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary June 20.

Mrs. Ulrich was a 1946 graduate of the former Lititz High School.

She was a police officer in Lititz for 25 years, retiring in 1991. She was the first woman officer in the borough's history.

She had been a deputy sheriff in Lancaster County and was also a crossing guard for five years.

Mrs. Ulrich was a member of Lititz Church of the Brethren.

She enjoyed traveling. She and her husband had a second home in Cape May, N.J.

Born in Lititz, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Bessie C. Hartranft Keller.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Beth A., wife of Joseph Burns, Morgantown; one son, William A., husand of Cynthia J. Ulrich, Lititz; three granddaughters; two great-grandsons; and one sister, Violet Myers, Lititz.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Davidson, and a brother, W.A. Keller.

Obituary: R. Glenn Fellenbaum, a retired mechanic and racing enthusiast who lived at 309 New Haven Drive, Lititz, died Tuesday afternoon at his home after a six-month illness. He was 69.
He was the husband of Elizabeth Y. "Toot" Ober Fellenbaum, with whom he marked their 47th wedding anniversary on June 24.
Fellenbaum worked for the past two years at Manheim Auto Auction.
Between 1986 and 1990, he was a warehouseman for Shirlee Manufacturing, New Holland.
He had been a mechanic for 18 years for Wenger Implement Inc. at the Buck, retiring in 1985. Fellenbaum also did general farming at the Dr. Henry W. Huffnagle farm at the Buck for 19 years.
For more than 30 years he followed the Micro-Sprint Racing Circuit. Fellenbaum was a member of Linda's Speedway, Jonestown, and also helped to work with security there for two years.
He was also a lifetime member of Lanco Micro-Midget Auto Racing Club, Brickerville, and a member of the Checkered Flag Fan Club.
Fellenbaum was a private first class in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, serving after World War II.
He was a member of Lampeter Church of the Brethren, where he had been head usher at one time.
He also enjoyed hunting.
Born in Rapho Township, he was the son of the late Clyde S. and Edna D. Hilton Fellenbaum.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Sharon S.
Harnish, at home; two grandsons; two great-grandchildren; five brothers: Robert H., Washington Boro; Clyde A., Conestoga; Fred A., East Petersburg; Daniel H., Lititz; and Marlin J., Leola; and four sisters: Evelyn H. Good, Columbia; Alta H., wife of Charles Correll, Lewes, Del.; Ida Grace, wife of Amos Sands, Elizabethtown; and Edna Blanche, wife of Alvin Bauman, Millersville.

A. PINKERTON DIES AT AGE 79

Albert W. Pinkerton, 79, of 45 N. Hazel St., Manheim, died this mroning at Moravian Manor, Lititz after a six month illness.
Until his illness, Pinkerton was employed at Pennsylvania State Farm Museum at Landis Valley. He retired from Penn Central Railroad after 27 years service, and was previously employed as a linotype operator for 23 years with a printing company in Manheim.
He was the husband of Evelyn Hilton Pinkerton.
Pinkerton was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Manheim, and the Brotherhood of Railroad Clerks.
Born in Manheim, he was the son of the late Neilson W. and Mary Sachs Pinkerton.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are a daughter Dorothy, wife of Hugh J. Porter, Morehead City, N.C.' a grandson and a brother Paul E. Manheim.

Mrs. Kissinger was a member of Jerusalem Lutheran Church of Rothsville.

She enjoyed gardening.

Born in Rothsville, she was the daughter of the late Henry S. and Clara L. Hilton Kissinger.

Reuben P. Horst, 73, of 929 Pine Hill Road, Lititz, died at 6:05 p.m. Friday at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, after a long illness. He had been a patient there for four weeks.


He was the husband of the late Alverta Kissinger Horst, who died Nov. 10, 1987.

He was a resident of Warwick Township for 50 years.

Horst was employed by Miller and Hartman, retiring in 1982. Prior to that he was employed by Lanco.

After his retirement, he worked part time in the produce department at Weis Market, Lititz.

He was a member of Church of the Nazarene, Ephrata, the Brunnerville Fire Co. and Teamsters Local 771.

Born in Wood Corner, he was the son of the late Clayton H. and Annie Zimmerman Horst.

He is survived by one daughter, Fay H., wife of the Rev. Raymond E. Stark, Bristol; one grandson; three sisters: Miriam, wife of Eugene Hahn, Ephrata; Elsie, wife of Emory McEllhenney, Stevens, and Elsie, wife of Rev. Ira Hobey, New Egypt, N.J., and one brother, Jacob Horst, Denver.

MARGIE KISSINGER, SHOE COMPANY WORKER

Margie C. Kissinger, 96, of 1216 Orchard Road, Lititz, died there Sunday afternoon after a three-month illness.

She worked in the 1930s and 40s for her father at the former Kissinger Cigars, Rothsville. After that, she worked 25 years for the former A.J. Beford Shoe Company Inc., Lititz, retiring in 1970.
She enjoyed cooking and was an avid Phillies fan.

Born in Rothsville, she was the daughter of the late Henry S. and Clara Lavina Hilton Kissinger.

Surviving are a daughter, O. Mae, wife of Jacob D. "Jack" Helman, with whom she lived; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Esther H. of Ocala, Fla.

She was preceded in death by seven brothers and a sister.

Victor W. Mumma, 74, of 17 E. Walnut St., died Tuesday evening at Lebanon Veterans Administration Hospital following a lengthy illness. He had been a patient at the hospital for the past four weeks.
Born in Rothsville, he was a son of the late Wallace and Ina Williams Mumma.
Mumma had been a production worker at the former Fleet Air Shoe Co., Ephrata, for more than 45 years.
He was a member of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Ephrata.
Mumma also belonged to Father Daley Council 4191 Knights of Columbus, Ephrata, and Santa Maria Assembly Nights of Columbus, Fourth Degree.
He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3376, Ephrata, where he was a past commander, and a life member of the Military Order of the Cootie, an honorary degree of the VFW.
Mumma was a member of Amvets Post 136 and American Legion Post 429, both of Ephrata, and the Fraternal Order of Police Red Rose Lodge 16 of Lancaster.
He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving as a corporal in Europe.
Surviving are a sister, Betty J. Heiney, with whom he resided; and a brother, Lavern W., husband of Marguerite Mumma of Talmage.

VALENTINE H. EITNIER

Valentine H. Eitnier, 75, 506 E. Front St., Lititz, and a native of Myerstown, died early Thursday morning in the Lancaster General Hospital after a short illness.

He is the son of the late Elam and Emma Helman Eitnier.

Before retiring, he had been employed by the Morgan Paper Co., Lititz, and by the Lititz Borough.

Surviving are his wife, the former Barbara Williams; eight grand children; two great-grand children; four sisters; Mrs. Bessie Showalter, Reading; Mrs. Maud Michael, Elizabethtown RD 2; Lilliam, wife of Roy Lehn, Hollywood, Fla., and Ida, wife of Lester Lehn, Litiz Pike.

The child from this marriage was:

Obituary: Anna S. Ulrich, 91, of Audubon Villa Nursing Home, Lititz, died Tuesday evening at the home after an illness of five months.
Formerly of 529 Rome Road, Lititz, she had been a resident at Audubon Villa for four years. She was the wife of the late Ammon S. Ulrich, who died in 1980.
A homemaker, she was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Penryn. Mrs. Ulrich was also a former member of the Lititz Fire Company auxiliary.
She enjoyed crocheting and tatting.
Born in Lexington, she was the daughter of the late John M. and Hettie L. Shelley Hilton.
Surviving are a daughter, Margaret P. Weller, Mohnton; two sons, Russell E. and Bruce K., both of Lititz; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
